Palm Desktop 4.2.1

Hello,
I bought a used Tungsten E on eBay. I find the Palm Desktop application OK overall, but there are a couple of things I don't like about it:
- Apparently, it's not possible to create non-timed items in the Calendar and have them be moved automatically to the next day until they're marked as Done
- It's not even possible to drag and drop non-timed items to move them manually to another day. The only way to do this, is to go to the current day, edit the item, and change the day. As this must be performed for each item, it's quite cumbersome :-/
Are there alternative PIM applications you would recommend, whether it's MS Outlook or something else?
FWIW, I used to use the venerable EccoPro, but stopped using it for Calendar as I couldn't get infos in the Palm to sync correctly with the PC with HoSync.
Thank you.

Palm Desktop 4.2 Windows 10

Palm Desktop is the desktop companion software for all Palm devices. It allows users to view, sort, find, edit, back up, and add anything to Palm OS handhelds. This update features a new user. I cannot get Palm Desktop 4.2.1 to install on either of two computers using Panther. One had an old 4.0 on it, the other was a fresh install. They both fail the same way; hotsync manager doesn't install, then the applications won't work because the shared libs are missing.

Palm Desktop 4.2.1 Rev A. works with: Tungsten C, E, T3, T2, T, W; Zire 31, 21, original Zire; Palm i705, m500 series, m100 series; Palm VII series, V series, III series, Pilot series; also compatible with Zire 72, 71 (only if you have Mac OS 9). compatible with: Mac OS X; Mac OS 9 (version 9.2.2 and higher) Get Palm Desktop at. Palm Desktop for Mac v.4.2.1 Palm Desktop for Mac 4.2.1 is such a professional tweak tool which includes the Palm Desktop and HotSync Manager software developed specifically for the Macintosh. It includes Palm Desktop software and all-new HotSync Manager software, complete with. As soon as he clicked on Preview in Palm Desktop 4.2.1's Print Dialog Box, Palm Desktop 4.2.1 Quit - this EXACTLY what happens on my set up. When we did it again, and instead of clicking on Preview in Palm Desktop 4.2.1's Print Dialog Box, the genius clicked on Print, and then on Preview, we saw the Print Preview OK.

tungsten E can work with microsoft outlook. if you don't have the original CD for the device, you can purchase an application called pocketmirror from chapura. it's a good alternative as a replacement for palm outlook conduits that usually comes alongside the palm desktop software CD for palm devices.

  • My Palm Desktop will not open the May calendar in the month mode. I can access that month in either daily or weekly mode but not in the monthly one. May seems to be the only month that is affected. It opens properly on my Treo 680 but not on the desktop. I have reinstalled the desktop and resynced without any correction in the problem.
    Thanks for any assistance.

Hi. Is there any chance that ACCESS might produce a version of the software that is immune to this problem. If it is due to data corruption, it would seem to me that this corruption is being caused by the ACCESS software. As far as I know, there is no other software on my system with access to these files. It seems to me that the software should either not create the corrupted records in the first place, or alternatively, be able to tolerate them. I would be happy to send you a dump of my calendar file if that would help to diagnose the problem (assuming I can ever open it again). Thanks.

  • Is there (and if not, I think there should be) a list somewhere of email clients whose address books will sync with a palm Treo (palm Desktop version 6.2)? I have been happily using various palm handhelds for about 6 years now and have been syncing the address book with Mozilla and now Thunderbird for the last couple years. I currently have an m130, but it's time to upgrade to a 'smart phone' as I'm tiering of carrying around two devices. Unfortunately, the Treo requires palm Desktop version 6.2 which is not compatible with the Thunderbird palm sync. I have had the idea that Outlook (which I've never used or been exposed to) will sync with palm, but something I read gave me the impression that I would need to buy some third party software to make that happen, plus the $110 they want for Outlook. I would like to think there are other choices for someone who just wants to sync their smart phone with their email client's address book. It seems that such syncing ability would be esential to palm's sales and that a listing of all such syncing possibilities would be extremely beneficial to sales, particularly for new sales to people aren't already insiders on this sort of topic. The lack of ability to sync with Thunderbird may just cause me to stick with my old m130 awhile longer and give up on the idea of a nice new smart phone.

Wow, thanks a bunch! You just saved me from a long, involved, and discouraging search for an alternative. I'm using WindowsXP, palm m130, palm desktop 4.1, Thunderbird 2.0.0.21 and Thunderbird's palm sync conduit palmsync-2.0.0.x-wsm . I'm wanting to purchase a Treo 700 on ebay, but went to the palm site, clicked on the support link, then the Treo 700, then the downloads tab and it directed me to desktop 6.2, which made me believe I would have to use that to sync a treo 700.
I do wish that both palm and Thunderbird would talk more about the palm Thunderbird palm sync. Unless you're a real geek or very determined (I'm the later), you're not likely to find out that such capability exists. I can't believe I'm the only one out there who needs to have my email client address book contacts with me all the time, so there has to be others who are looking for this.
Next stop, ebay - I have a smart phone to buy.

  • Here's my problem. I haven't been able to sync with my elderly Palm IIIC for about 2 years. Now my daughter gave me her Palm Zire 31. All my data are in my Palm Desktop on my iMac G5. Somewhere along the way I tried using iSync and got a bunch of stuff in my Mac address book. So I did a hard reset on the Palm Zire 31, then successfully hot-synced on my G5. But my nice address from my Palm Desktop file isn't coming over, just the crummy one from the Mac address book I think. My Palm Desktop address file has all the names in categories etc. I have tried making sure I have the correct conduits for syncing with the Palm desktop, and I tried telling the Sync operation to override with the Mac contents. I just want to move all my address data from my Palm Desktop on my Mac to the Zire. Any help here?

If you want to move all of the address data from your Palm Desktop to your handheld organizer, there is only one way to do it: using the Palm-supplied conduits to do so, not iSync and it's built-in iSync Palm Conduit. The transfer of all of the data from the Palm Desktop, including categories, simply is not supported by iSync or the iSync Palm Conduit.
The Missing Sync for Palm OS is an alternative, but you have to plan carefully how you do this, as you must first move the data from the Palm Desktop to either your device—or, through an export/import process—directly into both iCal and the Address Book. iCal task data doesn't survive this process, only calendaring data. In either event, categories don't transfer.
You'll have to perform some manual categorization on both your device and in the Address Book, and iSync will not support these changes. It won't reverse or otherwise modify them, it simply won't synchronize them. This is the case because you must overwrite the data on your handheld the first time you use the Missing Sync for Palm OS to synchronize.
The Missing Sync for Palm OS will, but only when using Mac OS X 10.4.4 or later, and an advanced Palm device with Palm OS 5.4 or later on board, as I recall. Only the Z22 would qualify, if that contention is true. Here is a list of Palm OS versions tied to specific handheld devices:
    http://kb.palmone.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE/,/?St=69,E=0000000000412440418,K=2 589,Sxi=8,useTemplate=Case.tem,CASE=10714
My Treo 600, with Palm OS 5.2.1, does not qualify as an advanced device and does not support categorization in the same manner as later devices do.

  • I have a Palm Centro (AT&T), Palm Desktop by Access version 6.2.2, Windows Vista. I'd like to move my photos off the phone and onto the expansion card. When I open Palm Desktop, and click on the Media button, it freezes. It just sits there, and the little circle thingy (Vista version of the hourglass) just keeps spinning. I've left it doing that for over a half hour, then end up using the Task Manager to shut down Palm Desktop.

  • I'm very dependent on Palm Desktop 4.2.2 to keep my life organized. My old Palm died long ago, but I like Palm Desktop more than any other alternatives I've seen. I've ordered a new iPod Touch. I'm pretty sure that, to use it with my iBook (running OS 10.4.11) that I'll need to upgrade to Leopard or Snow Leopard if I want to share info with the Touch.
Moreover, I think I'll need to sever any ties to my beloved Palm Desktop: I don't think it's compatible with OS 10.6. I've explored similar posts, but haven't found an answer I could use or understand. So if someone knows of an online description of migrating from Palm Desktop to either the equivalent Apple products or to Google, I'd appreciate the URL.
The main feature I like in Palm Desktop is the ability to create links between all the modules. For example, I can set an appointment with a doctor, then attach the doctor's contact information and attach a memo that has a list of questions and directions to the new office. My existing database is cross-linked between all these types of info.
Is there any way I can retain these cross links when I migrate? Do any of the Apple PIM programs let you create these kinds of cross references with new information? Does Google or some other software let you do this better?
From what I've read, it sounds like getting the information exported into a format that can be imported to a new program isn't easy. BTW, I'll also be migrating from Eudora to either Mail, Thunderbird mail, or some third party equivalent. I won't use any flavor of Outlook. Is there something about MobileMe that would make this migration easier?
Can you tell that I'm operating on the very fringe of what I'm technically able to understand? I've stuck with Palm Desktop for 8 years. I'd appreciate any guidance anyone could provide -- in an easy, step-by-step way. Forgive me if this information exists elsewhere. Directions to that info also would be appreciated.
Quickly exceeding my technological Comfort Zone,
    Marganne

The Palm Desktop works fine with 10.6.6 (and even Hotsyncs to Palm, though I gather this is irrelevant to you). However it is dependent on Rosetta, so (avoiding speculation to conform with the terms of this Forum) were Rosetta to be removed in a future system upgrade the Palm Desktop would be inoperable.
You're not going to be able to salvage the contents and use them in a linked fashion in the same way. It's possible to salvage the contents, though it's going to entail some work.
MEMOS - Evernote (basic version free) is a good replacement and extremely flexible: its contents can be synced to an iPhone or iPod Touch. The contents of the Palm Memos can be imported into Evernote using the Palm Desktop Memos Importer for Evernote (free)
CALENDARS - Palm Desktop menu File>Export and export Date Book as vCal. In iCal File>Import and import the vCal file into iCal - it will appear as an 'On My Mac' calendar. Use File>Export>Export to export this as an .ics file. Create a new calendar under your MobileMe login name (I'm assuming you've upgraded to the new MobileMe calendar) and import the .ics file into this. Delete the previously imported calendar. (If you don't want to use MobileMe just leave the imported calendar where it is.)
You can't separate the Palm categories and you will need to go through it making any necessary adjustments.
It's worth considering BusyCal, which is like 'Pro' version of iCal with much better handling of ToDos and many extra facilities. On an iPod Touch it's well worth considering Week Cal which, though I've not tried it, appears to be a much better calendar than the rather basic built-in one.
TASKS - you will have to enter these manually, one at a time - it doesn't appear to be possible to import them into iCal. iCal won't handle repeating ToDos - BusyCal will. They also make BusyToDo for iOS which reads the ToDos from the MobileMe calendar and handles them separately and much better.
ADDRESSES - you can export these as a vCard - select all first - and import that into Address Book (watch out for duplicates if you are already using Address Book).
It's not clear if you have MobileMe: if you don't want to sync between computers or iPhone/iPod Touch you don't need it, but if you do it's the best way - Google and Yahoo have issues. However you should be able to sync to an iPod Touch using iTunes, though as I don't have this device I don't know whether there are any downsides.

  • When starting quick install, i get informed that 'an unidentified programme wants to access my PC' its the quick install .exe , however when i grant the programme safe i get informed that palm desktop quick install has stopped working and i will be notified if there is a solution.... which inevitably there is not! Any idea's?
    Post relates to: Tungsten E2

    barrybaillie,
These warnings sound like the Vista's UAC kicking in. If this is the case, you should know that Quick Install does not work in Vista.
The downloadable Desktop 6.2.2 for Vista has a replacement to Quick Install that does work - but the Desktop itself is truly terrible and loses many other functions (Expense, NotePad, VersaMail, colour-coded events, Birthdays and Anniversaries) that you may have come to expect from your Desktop.
If your current Desktop is otherwise working as expected, you should know that an alternative to Quick Install already exists on your machine and this does work on Vista. The easiest way to access it is to right-click the program you wish to install, then > Send to... > Palm Powered Handheld. This is a shortcut to the program instapp in the Palm folder.
An installation window will pop up (a UAC confirmation *may* pop up and can be dismissed) showing the chosen program ready for Hotsync. At this point you may also Add other programs/files. Hotsync when ready.
A further alternative that I understand works with Vista is the freeware Pilot Install ( http://www.freewarepalm.com/utilities/simplyinstall-pilotinstall.shtml ) and which bypasses Palm's software entirely.
    Hope this helps!

  • I own a Treo650. I want to permanently delete Palm Desktop so I never have to use it again. Can iSync be used on its own to sync the Treo with my address book and iCal? Does it need to have a portion of the Palm software to sync to my Treo? Thanks.

No, you cannot: not with iSync. You must install an up-to-date version of the Palm Desktop, version 4.2.1 revision D or later, in most cases, because iSync requires that the HotSync Manager, Transport Monitor and other bundled processes be present in your configuration to launch, supervise and terminate a synchronization event.
You do not have to use the Palm Desktop, and do not need to have an alias to it in your Dock. Deleting it is generally not a good idea for most users, for a number of reasons.
As an alternative, you can sychronize a Palm OS 4 or later device using the Missing Sync for Palm OS, which installs its own equivalent components to those required by iSync, and in fact, defeats the HotSync Manager and Transport Monitor during installation and configuration.

The installation still appeared to run through to the end, but now I cannot open Palm Desktop (it crashes immediately) at all. I have tried this several times (downloading anew each time, restarting my computer etc etc) and also unistalled and then installed etc. Same thing each time. I have several questions:
Is Palm Desktop Version 4.2.1 for Mac compatible and will run on a MacBook Pro running Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard?
If I do a 'migration assistant' to move my applications to the new computer from my backup harddrive, will the Palm program move over okay and be useable? Or,---
Do I have to install Palm Desktop from scratch? If so, can I download Palm Desktop from the website - I cannot find a page anywhere on palm.com to download the program. Does anyone have a link?
Or, is the Palm Desktop program that would work with Snow Leopard a different version than the 4.2.1 I have? And if so, how do I upgrade/move my data from 4.2.1 to a newer version?
I don't need to be able to HotSync as I no longer have the Palm device. I just want to be able to use the desktop software.
    Thanks for the help,
    Tara

    Tara,
I could have been you asking a very similar question, although I'm still not sure on the solution after some of the knowledgeable answers.
Like you, I have been using Palm Desktop to store 5 years of information, and I'm getting ready to buy the new iMac who reps tell me is probably not compatible with Palm Software anymore or will not and I should find other alternatives to store all my information.
For instance, I use Palm as my date book and To Do List which I find very convenient. Apple reps told me I could try getting used to iCal for this which I have been doing lately to try & get used to it.
Then there are my addresses. I also use Palm to store all my basic addresses (some with E-mail, some without). It was recommended to me to just use the address book that comes with the iMac. I've never used it but I can see in itself, it's easy to add addresses. My computer consultant also told me that she could easily transfer the addresses from those on Palm to my Thunderbird which I use with Firefox. So, if all my addresses were transferred from my Palm to Thunderbird, then I would just have them on Thunderbird, but I find it easier navigating them in Palm.
The last thing I use Palm for and the most important is under the menu of 'Memos'. For each category, I have created an alphabetized subject, like computers, legal, passwords, shopping (about 30 topics) and when I want to save important information, I go to that category and write as much or as little as a reference. I wondered 'which' application I would use in order to create a similar way of looking up information on subjects.
I copied/pasted it all into a simple word document but that's not really made for what I want.
The last time I went to an Apple store and explained what I wanted -- they were the ones who suggested to use iMac addresses to store my Palm addresses, iCal to use as a new calendar and to do list, and finally an application (on the dock) called 'E-mail' where I could do a similar thing as I did on my Palm by creating a series of categories, and when I click on it, a memo page comes up where I can type anything I want to related to that topic. It was demonstrated to me, altho I forgot how she did it, but although it was not meant for a function like that, it's easily done as with the Palm. I told my computer consultant this.
She was concerned that I may not be able to use my Thunderbird G-mail system if I have all my info in iMac applications. Yet if the addresses are in Thunderbird as well, I can't see why that would interfer.
Anyway, today she sent me this link & question and I start reading about a 'sync' application and I would have no problem. They also mentioned software called Benno, but told me to try and use Apple apps first instead of having to go out and buy a whole new application to replace the functions of Palm.
Ideally, I would love to continue to use Palm Desktop as I'm using it on this desktop, but I'm not clear if I can. If I can't, what might be my best solution given what I wrote. I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Trudijane

Hello Christine and welcome to the Palm forums.
I've used Palm Desktop and Mark/Space the Missing Sync for Palm OS on the Mac. Of the two, I would pay the money for the Missing Sync. It is a much better application than Palm Desktop when you use the Mac. I haven't used PocketMac before. I checked their website and they don't seem to have a client for Palm OS 5, which is the operating system on your Centro. So it looks lile for now, the Missing Sync is the only real alternative.
I have two main gripes with Palm Desktop for the Mac. The first is all the trouble I've seen on this board and Brighthand.com about trying to get the software installed. It should be super easy, but for some people it is a nightmare. The other big issue is the inexplicable breakdown in the ability to HotSync, which, usually requires that you try and reinstall the Palm Desktop software which sends you back to my first gripe. To get a feel for what I'm talking about, check out this thread on the Mac OS transport monitor issue.
I really like Palm. And I've been using Apple's computers since 1984, but Palm Desktop for the Mac is totally the pits.

  • No device
When I tried to sync my Tungsten E2, recieved an error message (could not establish communications - check your settings). On a support website, it suggested the first step I try is to download and install the latest software. I did and installed it. Palm did its sync with no problem. HOWEVER, when I ran the Palm desktop, only the Calender, Media, and Note Pad would display their data. In the log, it showed that all of the apps uploaded their data.
After re-installing the software two more times, now it only displays pictures from Media, and nothing else! What gives? and how can I correct this?

It's really up to you, but there are some caveats that you should be aware of.
With regard to synchronization, the Palm Desktop is not now (and never will be) Sync Services aware. Virtually all applications which engage in synchronization—under Mac OS X 10.4 or later—are, or soon will be. This renders the Palm Desktop effectively useless or, at the very least, outmoded, as a synchronization tool.
The Address Book is integrated to degree with Mail, and will be more so under Mac OS X 10.5, scheduled for release in about 6 months. The Palm Desktop is not.
I use the Address Book for contacts, iCal or calendars, the Missing Sync for Palm OS to synchronize them and to synchronize memos, AvantGo content, selected iPhoto and iTunes files, along with such mundane applications as airline schedules. And, I use Mail.
I'm no fan of Microsoft, but if Outlook worked well for you in the PC world, you should consider Entourage, with it's Sync Services aware capabilities, it's ability to synchronize contacts with the Address Book, calendars with iCal and memos through .Mac Sync. It is, of course, an integrated application including Mail capabilities, and is generally used as an alternative to Mail, the Address Book and iCal.

  • I use Palm Desktop 4.1.4 on my Windows XP machine (I don't own a PDA). I enter my appointments in Week view and they look fine, but when I go to Month view (I want to print this view), the events for a given day show up in the wrong order!
For example, on one day I see:
    9a Event
    10:30a Event
    2p Event
    12p Event
and on the next day I see:
    9a Event
    2p Event
    10a Event
I tried changing things in Options and Preferences - no luck. I have messed around with it and can't figure out any weird pattern it might be sorting by (I've tried re-entering appointments to see whether it sorts by the last time they were entered/edited, and looked into whether it was sorting by category, length of event name, first digit of the time, length of time, alphabetically by event name, by whether it repeats/has a location/has a note/has an alarm/was entered by clicking once and typing or by right-clicking). It just seems baffling, and it definitely seems like a bug, since of course you'd want your events sorted by time.
Does anyone know what's going on or have this problem?
    Thanks!

I had looked at this in response to another post, and didn't notice the same problem. But then I went back further and noticed it sure enough...it's only occasional.
I haven't done any kind of analysis as you have apparently done, mostly because I don't really use the desktop application except occasionally.
Thought maybe it sorts repeating events differently than single events, but I've seen it both ways, so that doesn't seem to be it.
It doesn't bother me enough, but it certainly seems like it would warrant an email support request to Palm, to see if they have an answer.

I have a Centro/Verizon Wireless using Versamail with accounts established for personal POP and Exchange e-mail synchronization. The latter account is for work. Previously I owned a Treo 650p using Versamail.
When I first installed Palm OS Desktop and synched to my Centro device, it was on a Windows XP home computer, and no Versamail accounts were defined. First I downloaded and installed the Versamail version which allowed Exchange synchronization. I exported the Treo650p contacts list to a disk file, and imported it onto the Windows XP home computer into the Palm OS Desktop installed with the Centro-supplied CD. This synched the imported contacts list to the Centro fine. After I defined all the POP and Exchange accounts, synchronization with the office Exchange contacts list worked fine, and still does. Synchronization with the windows XP home computer for contacts seems to still be ok, too regardless of the MS Exchange Versamail account commingling with my personal POP accounts. Maybe the install sequence is overriding the previous posts' notation that MS Exchange mail definition will override synch with Palm OS Desktop?
The problem now is I have a different/second home computer that's Vista os. I installed the Palm OS Desktop and synch with the Treo. The contacts list is not synching to this second home computer, maybe because I didn't follow the exact same sequence as for the Windows XP pc? I can still synch my Centro with my Windows XP pc and that includes contacts.
Is there a way on this second pc to override the MS Exchange contacts override for synchronization without having to go through the exact same install sequence as occurred on the Windows XP machine?

A new version of the Palm Desktop was released by palmOne last week for its models, and while reports were generally good, some users have reported problems with the new version.

Palm Desktop 4.2.1

Installation has forced some users to reinstall the desktop conduits for third party applications such as Pocket Mirror, Backup Buddy, and VersaMail, among others.

Additional issues are related to the new version of the Outlook conduit included with the Palm Desktop update. Some pre-existing issues have been solved, including a problem checking off tasks using DateBk5 on the handheld.

However, users are reporting that some problems have not been solved, most notably an issue that creates duplicate appointments when an appointment is edited on the handheld and an alarm goes off on the desktop. Even if the item is not changed in any way in Outlook on the desktop, duplicate events can be created during synchronization if the same appointment has been edited on the handheld. Some users have reported that using PocketMirror XT instead of the palmOne Outlook conduits solves the duplication problem.

Reports from Mac users have been more positive. New conflict resolution options included with the Mac version of the updated Palm Desktop allow Mac users to use both iSync and Palm Desktop conduits simultaneously. It is now possible to use iSync to sync only iCal data and use the Palm Desktop conduit to sync only contact information, for example. Improved iSync compatibility also includes the ability to sync both address fields between the handheld and the desktop computer.

More about the New Version of the Palm Desktop

Enhancements to Palm Desktop 4.1.4 for Windows include updated Palm Outlook conduits for the Tungsten T3 and Tungsten E. The update adds support for the new Birthday, web site, and instant messaging fields in the Contacts application, as well as the ability to sync home, work, and other addresses.

The new fields in the updated personal information management applications (Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, and Memos) will only synchronize with corresponding fields on the handheld. Synchronization with Older Handhelds is supported, but the new fields will not synchronize to the handheld.

Palm Desktop 4.1.4 for Windows requires a Pentium PC with Windows 98, NT 4.0, 2000, ME, or XP with a minimum of 16 MB of RAM, 50 MB of hard disk space, and one available USB or serial port.

Palm Desktop 4.2.1 for Mac enables synchronization of a palmOne handheld with the Date Book, Address Book, To Do, Memo Pad, Note Pad, and Voice Memo applications, as well as backup functionality for Palm Photos.

Additional features include the Send to Handheld droplet, version 1.3, which allows users to send photos and audio files to a palmOne handheld or expansion card, as well as improved compatibility with Mac OS 10.3.

Palm Desktop 4.2.1 requires Mac OS 9.2.2 or higher or Mac OS X 10.1.2 or higher, as well as 25 MB of hard disk space and one USB or serial port.

Owners of the new Zire 31 and Zire 72 are encouraged to use the version of Palm Desktop supplied on the CD with their handheld, as the CD includes additional conduits that are not contained in this Palm Desktop update.

The updated Palm Desktop is a free download for owners of palmOne handheld devices. To download the Windows or Mac version, visit the palmOne web site.
